Breastfeeding and Your Period: What Every New Mom Should Know

breastfeeding Oct 16, 2024

If you're a new mom who's breastfeeding, you might be wondering about your period. When will it come back? Will it be different? Does nursing really keep it away? Let's dive into how breastfeeding affects your menstrual cycle.

The Short Answer: Yes, It Does!

Breastfeeding can indeed affect your menstrual cycle. For many women, it delays the return of their period. But everyone's body is different, so let's break this down.

How Breastfeeding Affects Your Period

  1. Delayed Return of Menstruation

Many breastfeeding moms don't get their period for several months after giving birth. This is because of a hormone called prolactin. Prolactin helps you make milk, but it also suppresses ovulation. No ovulation usually means no period.

  1. Irregular Periods

When your period does come back, it might be irregular at first. You might have:

  • Longer or shorter cycles than before
  • Heavier or lighter flow
  • More or less cramping

This is normal as your body adjusts to its new normal.

  1. Temporary Birth Control

Breastfeeding can act as a natural form of birth control. This is called the Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM). But be careful! It's not 100% effective, and it only works under specific conditions.

When Will Your Period Come Back?

There's no one-size-fits-all answer. It depends on several factors:

  • How often do you breastfeed
  • Whether you're exclusively breastfeeding
  • Your individual body chemistry

Some moms get their period back within a few months. Others don't menstruate until they stop breastfeeding completely. Most fall somewhere in between.

What to Expect When Your Period Returns

  1. Changes in Milk Supply

You might notice a temporary dip in your milk supply just before or during your period. This is due to hormonal changes. Don't worry - it's usually short-lived.

  1. Changes in Milk Taste

Some babies fuss more at the breast during the mom's period. This might be because hormonal changes can slightly alter the taste of breast milk.

  1. Return of Fertility

Remember, getting your period means you're ovulating again. You can get pregnant even if you're still breastfeeding. If you're not ready for another baby, talk to your doctor about birth control options.

Common Questions About Breastfeeding and Periods

Q: Can I use tampons when my period returns? A: Yes, it's safe to use tampons once your doctor gives you the all-clear after childbirth (usually at your 6-week checkup).

Q: Will my period affect my baby? A: No, having your period won't harm your baby or your milk. You can continue breastfeeding as usual.

Q: I got my period back quickly. Am I not making enough milk? A: Not necessarily. Some women get their periods back early even with a full milk supply. If you're concerned, talk to a lactation consultant.

Q: I haven't had a period in months. Is this normal? A: Yes, this can be normal for breastfeeding moms. If you're worried, check with your healthcare provider.

Tips for Managing Your Period While Breastfeeding

  1. Stay Hydrated- Drink plenty of water, especially during your period. This helps maintain your milk supply.
  2. Eat Well- A balanced diet rich in iron can help combat fatigue during your period.
  3. Rest When You Can- Periods can be tiring, especially for new moms. Try to get extra rest when possible.
  4. Track Your Cycle- Keep a record of when your periods return and how long they last. This can help you predict future cycles.
  5. Be Prepared- Once your period returns, keep menstrual supplies handy. Your cycle might be unpredictable at first.

Remember, every woman's body is different. What's normal for one mom might not be normal for another. If you have concerns about your menstrual cycle while breastfeeding, don't hesitate to talk to your healthcare provider.

Breastfeeding is a beautiful journey, and understanding how it affects your body is part of that journey. Your period will return in its own time. Until then, enjoy this special time with your little one.

Hey mama,

I'm Brooke Miller,

Before becoming a mom, I chronically dieted & thought "eat less, move more" was the healthiest option. I dealt with exhaustion, mood swings, hormone imbalances (not getting a regular cycle), high cholesterol and weight cycling. I felt like something was wrong with me.

Before I got pregnant with my first son, I discovered the balanced nutrition approach I teach inside The Postpartum Shift. Once I implemented the framework, I was energized, gained strength, got my period back, lowered my cholesterol & maintained my healthiest weight. I continued this during my pregnancies & postpartum periods and recovered quickly after birth, made more than enough milk for my babies, had energy (even with the sleep deprivation) & stable mood. Postpartum was really enjoyable.

With a decade of experience as a Registered Dietitian and Certified Lactation Counselor, I created The Postpartum Shift to help moms boost energy, mood, metabolism & milk supply to have a stress-free & enjoyable postpartum experience.
